William Morris, 1834 - 1896
Morris was a Renaissance man - artist, craftsman, decorator, writer, poet and Socialist. He was a founder of the famous Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The Pre-Raphaelite friends formed their own company of designers and decorators which expanded to include other artists and designers. When this partnership came to an end, Morris formed a new business called Morris & Co.
The patterns William Morris designed are instantly recognisable. He is a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, a style and ethos focused on craftmanship and design.
