Books for Babies turns 20

February 7 2011

CoverChristchurch City Libraries' Books for Babies programme, which encourages early literacy and library use, marked its 20th anniversary with a morning tea celebration at the Central Library this morning.

More than 50,000 Christchurch parents and their babies have received a Books for Babies pack since the project began in 1990, which was International Literacy Year.

Libraries Unit Manager Carolyn Robertson says sharing books, stories and language from day one is important for a baby's development.

“Each year we deliver about 5,000 Books for Babies packs and we have received tremendous feedback from parents. We regard the programme as one of our most precious services.”

The pack contains a high-contrast black and white board book entitled Baby's World, which is perfect for babies up to six months. It was the first book of its kind in New Zealand when developed specifically for the Books for Babies programme. A second title, Baby's World of Nature is now also distributed.

A recent recipient of the Books for Babies project says, Baby's World has been a wonderful visual development tool for the first three months of our baby’s life. It has been very gratifying to see him respond to the pictures, even in first few weeks from birth. He loves it!”

Ms Robertson says credible research has found an early introduction to books, language and stories is not only a warm and enjoyable experience for both child and parent, but also gives children a head start at school.

The Books for Babies pack is a gift to Christchurch residents and their babies from Christchurch City Libraries and its partners.
