Your parents can email readingcrusade@ccc.govt.nz if they have any questions. They can talk to a Christchurch City Libraries librarian or your teacher at school.

Do audio and e-books count?
Yes, you can record the details of any audio book or e-book on your entry form.

You will get a Crusaders certificate signed by a member of the Crusaders team. The Crusaders will not be able to visit individual schools.

Reading Crusade FAQ for teachers

What are the key dates for the Reading Crusade 2013?
Starting date: Monday 11 March 2013
Closing date: Friday 19 April 2013
Prizegiving: Monday 13 May 2013
How does the 2013 Reading Crusade work?
Step 1. Children get their logs from
  • You as their class teacher (you have been sent a small amount of these plus a master for you to photocopy), or
  • Download the reading log [1MB PDF], or
  • Their local library.
Step 2. Children are asked to read their choice of four books – fiction or non-fiction, books audio or e books, graphic novels, magazine, etc. – and complete their reading log.
Step 3. When they have completed a reading log with four different items, they bring it either to you, or to a parent or a librarian to enter online. This puts children in the draw for prizes. Children can enter as many times as they like but four new books must be read for each entry.
Step 4. Any completed entry (verified online) will get a certificate signed by Crusaders Head Coach Todd Blackadder. If entering multiple times, students will only get one certificate. Everyone who registers online will also go in the draw to win prizes including a chance to attend the prizegiving on 13 May 2013 at the Cashmere Club Hall, 50 Colombo Street, where they will be able to meet some of our favourite Crusaders.
Step 5. The prizegiving: Each school that participates will qualify for at least one entry (one adult and one child) to the prizegiving ceremony at the Cashmere Club that includes members of the Crusaders on Monday 13 May 2013. The school chooses which participating child attends the prize giving. It is up to each school how they choose their prizewinner. Schools with the highest participation rates will get bonus prizes.
Can I get someone to come to my school to talk to the students?
Yes. Staff from Christchurch City Libraries will be visiting schools. You can either have a visit to your staff meeting, or during school assembly to promote the Crusade and explain the new processes. To book a time, email readingcrusade@ccc.govt.nz or call Kathryn Hartley on 941 6647.
Where can I find more information on the Reading Crusade?
Email readingcrusade@ccc.govt.nz if you have any questions.
Do I need to enrol my school to be part of the Reading Crusade?
Yes, you must register that your school is participating in Reading Crusade and you do this online by 8 March 2013. You will be contacted by us in the final week of Term One to confirm your attendance and the name of your prize-winner and accompanying adult.
How does my school win prizes?
When you (or their parent or librarian) enters a verified reading log online, there is a compulsory school name requirement. There is a drop down menu with all Christchurch schools (including a home school option) for you to choose and give your school a chance to win. If your school is not on this list, please email readingcrusade@ccc.govt.nz.
What if I have children who can’t read four books?
If you have students who are unable to read four books by themselves, you can ask a parent, caregiver or buddy to read a book with them.
Do audio and e-books count? What about graphic novels?
Yes, students can read any combination of fiction or non-fiction titles, magazines, graphic novels or audio and e-books. Students can also include any books that they read for homework or for projects that they are working on at school.
What do students do with their reading log when it is all filled in?
Once you have entered their verified log online, the log is no longer required. However, you may wish to ask the students to retain them to keep a record of all the books they have read.
Do I need to register each child in my class individually?
Yes, the process is for individual children. However, the children themselves could assist you by working through the online registration process themselves. An easy way to do it would be to set it for homework, or children take turns during computer class.
When registering my class, can I enter the school address as contact?
Yes, this is fine.
I feel I don’t have time for the Crusade. Is there a way I can spend less time on it?
Yes, this year’s Crusade is more compact (shorter length and fewer books to read to qualify). To lessen the burden on teachers, this year parents and librarians can also facilitate the programme’s process, so you could decide to take a minimalist approach of discussing it with your students, providing the log and website address and then leave them to pursue the Crusade individually.
