National Poetry Day

National Poetry DayNational Poetry Day is a one-day celebration of poetry run each year in conjunction with the New Zealand Post Book Awards. It took place on Friday 22 August 2014.

The winners have been announced. Read our post that includes the winning poems Tongue tied by Stephen Davies (first place) and Gem and Mineral Society Hall, Waltham Road by Catherine Fitchett (runner up).

Terms and conditions

PoetryWrite an original piece of poetry and drop it into your local library or enter online by emailling entries to competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com for a chance to win prizes.

Any style or topic, 200 word limit. You can enter as many poems as you like. The first prize will be book vouchers to the value of $100. There will also be a $50 book voucher for the runner up. Entries opened Monday 28 July and closde 5pm on National Poetry Day (22 August 2014). Winners were announced Monday 8 September 2014.

Conditions of entry

  • This competition is open to all Christchurch City residents age 15 years and above.
  • Entries must be your own work. By submitting your entry you agree that you are the creator of the work and hold copyright.
  • The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The poem can be on any topic and any written form i.e. free, sonnet, ballad.
  • The first prize will be book vouchers to the value of $100. There will also be a $50 book voucher for the runner up.
  • It is a condition of entering the competition that entrants agree while they retain ownership of their work that Christchurch City Libraries may reproduce such work for promotional purposes.
  • Entries close 5pm Friday 22nd August 2014. Winners will be announced Monday 8th September 2014.
