Children’s Collections

PhotoEverything in the library is arranged to make finding what you want as easy as possible, but if you need help ask a librarian. That’s what we’re here for.

All children’s items are free to borrow.

Books for special situations
Books on sensitive topics have been collected together to make them more accessible. Topics range from adoption to toilet training to incest.
CDs & Cassettes
A collection of cassettes and CDs for children of all ages including a strong collection of books on tape.
CD-ROMs
A small collection of CD-Roms suitable for children.
DVDs
Children’s DVD titles are available at all of our libraries. They are issued free, for one week.
He Pukapuka Māori
As part of our commitment to, and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Children’s and Young Adult Services strive to collect as much quality material, written for children, as possible, written in Māori and about things Māori written in English and Māori.
Information Books
Information are set to present facts about a specific subject and this collection includes books that cater for children of all ages and abilities and interests. This collection is more recreational-based than curriculum-based. Text books are not included.
Information Files
The files consist of news and other clippings culled from a variety of sources and designed to provide current affairs material unavailable in book form as well as material to supplement the books in other collections.
Into reading
This collection is intended for beginning readers as well as "reluctant readers and comprises mostly of brief chapter books, heavily illustrated.
Large Print
Children’s large print titles are available with a special collection at Fendalton Library.
Magazines
Magazines suitable for children providing general interest reading and containing stories, poems and activities. Some magazines do have a focus on natural, scientific or craft topics.
Older Fiction
Aimed at children 10-12 and comprises the best of titles published in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, United States and Canada.
Picture Books
This collection is designed to introduce children to a wide range of experiences, settings, themes, feelings, situations, characters, art and language. Included in this collection are board books with cardboard pages designed for children in their 1st to 2nd year.
Posters
Posters of various popular topics such as animals, sports and book characters are available for loan. The collection is not suitable for teaching purposes.
Reference books
This collection provides up-to-date information on a wide variety of subjects with particular emphasis on New Zealand and Children’s Literature. Materials include encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries and yearbooks.
Videos
This collection tends to be more "recreational than educational" in appeal and consists of high quality drama /animation and information tapes.
Younger Fiction
This collection introduces children aged roughly 6-9 and "newly independent as readers to longer chapter books with a variety of themes, settings and characterization.
