As the icy fingers of winter spread over the region many people will be busy dealing with all the things the colder weather brings. This week we highlight three: Sport, colds and snuffles and warming winter recipes. If the weather forces you indoors, check out library events or visit your local library to find something great to take home!
Give ice sports a go
The sport calendar is busy in winter with rugby, netball and soccer all flat out on Christchurch's great sports grounds. If you fancy a change, this winter try out some ice sports - they can be great family activities. Christchurch has clubs for ice hockey, speed and figure skating and curling. The Alpine Ice Sports and Entertainment Centre is located on Brougham Street and a new ice rink has recently been constructed at Lake Tekapo. See our ice sports guide for more information or try the skiing and snow sports guide.
Your health: Winter colds
Colds are a pain in the neck - and sometimes everywhere else too. The common cold is a viral upper respiratory tract infection, which causes nasal stuffiness or a runny nose, a sore throat, a cough and perhaps a fever and headache. Read our guide to battling the common cold and find out about get well bags for children. Each bag contains puzzles, books and activities to amuse a sick child and are issued for one week.
Help test digital media products
OverDrive and NetLibrary are two digital media systems that allow the access and downloading of audio books, music, video and eBooks to your computer or laptop. Items can then be transferred to a CD player, MP3 player, Smart phone or pocket PC. Many audio titles can be burned to a CD to play in the car or at home.
Christchurch City Libraries are considering these products. Are you willing to give up an hour of your time to come into Central Library and play with these systems? You will be supported by your friendly library staff who can help you out if you get stuck and will give you a single movie ticket as a thank you for your time!
Trial times:
- OverDrive: June 16 and 18, 2-5pm
- NetLibrary: July 7 and 8, 2-5pm
Contact:
Please contact Colleen Finnerty on: libraryserials@ccc.govt.nz if you would like to participate and a preferred date and time for your participation. An indication if you are happy to participate in future trials is also welcome!
