Christchurch hosts a wide variety of alternative events and activities which can transport us into other worlds of science fiction and fantasy, re-enactment and war gaming.

Armageddon is an annual expo which takes place around New Zealand including Christchurch and features manga, animé, fantasy & science fiction and gaming. Armageddon is most popular with teens and you can read more about Armageddon on the pulse.

Comic writing and collecting

  • Christchurch Anime Tribe - social club for people interested in animé and manga comics and films.
  • Funtime Comics - a group of comic book artists and enthusiasts based in Christchurch. Their website provides forum for the discussion and promotion of comics. The group publishes comics and also holds workshops.

Game playing

  • The Barony of Southron Gaard is the Christchurch based South Island branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism - an international group dedicated to the research and re-creation of pre-1600 medieval Europe.
  • The Christchurch Wargaming Club - local wargaming club.
  • Comics Compulsion - a shop in Christchurch that sells comics, wargaming and role playing products and runs wargaming workshops.
  • Ordo Cygni or the University of Canterbury Medieval and Renaissance Society is a non-profit reenactment group interested in recreating aspects of European culture from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance.
  • Outpost 42, the home of New Zealand’s stormtroopers.
  • The Rebel Legion also have a New Zealand home page, the Naboo outpost.
  • Respawn - gaming lounge in Central Christchurch which organises tournaments for computer games.
