Introduction
Newspapers can be accessed at Christchurch City Libraries in several formats: as paper copies, on microfilm, or on the internet. With a very few exceptions, however, back runs of newspapers are held only for Christchurch newspapers.
This guide focuses on newspapers available in the Aotearoa New Zealand Centre. The Aotearoa New Zealand Centre holds copies of Christchurch newspapers from the earliest newspaper of Canterbury (11 January 1851) down to the present day. Most of these newspapers are available on microfilm.
Community newspapers are available in hard copy only and may not be photocopied. Some community libraries hold recent copies of local community newspapers.
Newspapers from elsewhere in New Zealand which have been microfilmed can be interloaned. These newspapers are listed in the publication New Zealand newspapers on microfilm.
