- February 6
- New evening paper, the "Sun" appears. This independent paper caused a sensation in the Newspaper industry because of its modern style and lavish use of illustrations.

March 6
- First point to point flight in Canterbury by J. W. H. Scotland from Timaru to Christchurch. In the same year, Scotland had the dubious privilege of becoming the first pilot to crash in New Zealand.
- April 3
- North Richmond joins City.
- August 24
- Large patriotic procession boosts war fever.
- September 23
- First Canterbury contingent sails on "Tahiti" and "Athenic" from Lyttelton for the war in Europe.
- November 2
- Riccarton (Deans) Bush presented to the city by the Deans family.
