Visit by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh (the first New Zealand visit by a reigning monarch).
June 22
Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme murder Parker’s mother in Victoria Park. Their subsequent trial was one of the most sensational in the city’s history.

Last tram journey in Christchurch.
December
Christchurch Regional Planning Authority formed.
