- Billy Graham crusade draws 50,000 to Lancaster Park.

- Totem pole carved in the state of Oregon, USA. The pole was presented to Christchurch and erected in North Hagley Park. See also 1980.

- Princess Margaret Hospital opens.

- City Council grants charter to the Canterbury Regiment.

- Memorial Avenue (a memorial to airmen killed in W.W.II) officially opens.
