Tea kiosk, Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Tea kiosk, Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Tea kiosk, Christchurch Botanic Gardens
[ca. 1930]

This is the original kiosk, a partially enclosed building built in 1910 for £300. In Sept. 1922 it was burnt to the ground in a fire thought to have been started by burglars. Rebuilding was begun almost immediately, with a tea tent being used as a temporary kiosk. The replacement building was similar to the old: eight-sides, but larger (with seating for 100), fully enclosed and of brick. Moore & Sons, a city building company, was paid £1436 to build the new kiosk. There was another fire in Apr. 1979 which left a burnt-out shell, and the kiosk was rebuilt on the same brick foundations. See Fire claimed oriignal kiosk too, Christchurch star, 1 May 1979, p. 36.
