"This was one of the earliest of the more substantial buildings erected by early colonists. The photograph of which the above is a reproduction was taken by Dr Barker himself in 1868 though the house had been standing for many years before that as the well-grown trees will show. The lad in the foreground is Mr S.D. Barker of this city. The house was situated on the present site of Maling's Buildings, opposite the Ladies' Club. " It was built on the site of the present Rydges Hotel, corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street
