Fendalton Road bridge

The first bridge over the River Avon on this site was completed before 1860. It was 39 ft. long and 24 ft. 6 in. wide. By 1874 the Provincial Engineer, George Thornton (1829-1914), was expressing concern about its dangerous state. Work on renewing the bridge was done using immigrant labour with a carpenter employed for one day. The photograph shows the bridge was very similar to, but shorter than, the Helmores Lane bridge which exists today. A new reinforced concrete bridge replaced the old wooden bridge in 1956. It was constructed to plans prepared by Royds and Sutherland, Consulting Engineers
