A horse bogged in the Avon River, Christchurch
[July 1906]

"It is a custom for carters to take their horses and conveyances into the Avon, near the Government Buildings, for a wash. Last week a young driver evidently got out of the ordinary washing area and his horse became bogged. It was in danger of being drowned, but, fortunately, it struck a firm holding, and its head was kept just above water. After considerable trouble a rope was made fast to the horse, the harness let loose, and the animal was dragged from its uncomfortable position "
