As the Brigade's ambulances were not sufficient for the demand, a number of private firms placed their motor delivery vans at the disposal of the Brigade and they were used as ambulances to take patients to hospital. From the left are R. Foot, S.S. Baird, R. Mathews, A. Stewart and I.H. Balkind. The vehicle with the number plate Ch 5830 is a 1912 UNIC made in Paris by Georges Richard. It was probably imported by J Ballantyne & Co. Ltd. as a bare chassis, because the van woodwork carried a Stevens & Son, Christchurch, bodywork plate. The UNIC was used six days a week for local deliveries as part of Ballantyne's fleet until the 1930s when it was retired to an orchard outside Christchurch for use as a spraying machine. The vehicle was restored in 2002 and competed in the 50th anniversary of the Dunedin to Brighton veteran car run -- New Zealand memories, issue 48, June/July 2004, p. 42-43
