Inia Te Wiata

Born 1915 in Otaki.
In 1947 went to London to study and sing, where he became one of the leading singers (bass baritone) at the Royal Opera House.
Married Beryl McMillan, also a singer and actor, in 1959.
Also performed in light opera, musicals and concerts, as well as acting in film.
Was the first Māori opera singer to earn an international reputation.
Also talented as a Māori carver.

Daughter Rima Te Wiata is also an actress and singer.
