Michele Leggott

Poet, critic, teacher and academic, Michele Leggott began publishing poetry around 1980. Her first book of poems, Like This? (1988) won the International PEN First Book of Poetry award. In 1995 she won the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry with DIA and in 2007, she was named New Zealand Poet Laureate for 2007/2008.

She has published five books of poems and been included in many anthologies of New Zealand poetry, as well as writing about Robin Hyde and appearing on sound recordings and films featuring New Zealand poets and poetry.

Michele Leggott is one of sixty authors who attended The Press Christchurch Writers Festival from September 4th to 7th, 2008

Leggott founded the New Zealand Electronic Poetry Centre, based at Auckland University, in 1991. In her collection of poetry, As Far as I Can See, Leggott writes about her deep sorrow at losing her sight — she has been going slowly blind since 1985.
