Christine Leunens was born in the United States, but her family moved to France where she became a very successful international model. She now lives in Palmerston North, and has recently published her first novel Caging Skies

Nominated for the Prix Medici in 2007, it is an intriguing story of Johannes, an avid member of the Hitler Youth, and Elsa, a young girl whom his parents have concealed in a secret room in their house.

His horror at what his parents have done soon turns to obsession, and as this grows he dreads the end of the war and the prospect of losing her. His solution, once his parents have died, is to keep Elsa in the house and to create the illusion that Hitler won the war.
