Dr Terry Ryan

Dr Terry RyanLibrary Kaumatua

Dr Ryan is Kāwai Kaitiaki of the Ngāi Tahu Whakapapa Unit and is charged with the kaitiakitanga of the Ngāi Tahu Tribal Whakapapa. Terry and his team are responsible for the care protection and restoration of the tribal whakapapa dating back to 1848, when the very first census of indigenous people conducted within the British Empire was published (you may know this as the Blue Book). Today this census forms the basis of the genealogy of Ngāi Tahu.

Dr Ryan’s komiti memberships and chairmanships in cultural and marae organisations over the years are astounding and in recognition of the many roles he has had he received an MBE for Services to Māori in 1995 and in 2001 he was awarded a Doctorate of Science Degree by Lincoln University for contributions to genealogy.

Terry your profound knowledge of whakapapa and of the Māori history of Te Wai Pounamu/ South Island makes you a priceless repository of Māori information. We are honoured to have you as part of our team.

Tena rawa atu koe
