Fiction Selector's Choice

The death of Eli Gold, David Baddiel.
A major literary figure lies dying in an American hospital and friends and family gather. Told through three narrators with their own views and agendas, this is a clever mixture of comedy and tragedy and an intriguing choice of subject for this notable British comedian.
Stagestruck, Peter Lovesey.
The latest mystery from this underrated British writer is a sharp and witty tale set in a grand Bristol theatre where a faded celeb is headlining a play. Theatrical types are satirised as a traditional British mystery unfolds.
22 Britannia Road, Amanda Hodgkinson.
A Polish mother and son come to Britain at the end of World War II where their husband and father waits, determined to make them become an English family. How these very damaged people learn to live after the terrible privations of war is well conveyed in this excellent first novel.
The borrower, Rebecca Makkai.
Another first rate debut novel. A children's librarian in a small town is drawn to one of her borrowers, a young boy whose very driven mother is subjecting him to a fundamentalist preacher who reprogrammes gay children. The librarian and the boy go on the run and how things turn out is unpredictable in this very readable, sometimes funny and sometimes sad, tale.
Derby Day, D.J. Taylor.
Taylor is one of the better English novelists at recreating the past, whether it's 19th century England or the 1930s. This one makes good use of his considerable knowledge of Victorian society in a highly entertaining novel with a colourful cast of characters from every walk of society, mixed up in plotting and conniving. As near to a real Victorian mystery as you can get and great fun.
