British flute concertos
The Welsh flautist Emily Beynon plays a selection of British flute concertos, accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Bramwell Tovey.
String quartet ; Piano trio ; Deux danses ; Reverie, Debussy.
Features Brodsky Quartet. "For those of us who recall the Brodskys as "Cool Britannia" clotheshorses, their 40th anniversary this year - well, for two of the line-up - comes as a shock. Less surprising is their compelling account, forthright and dramatic, rather than hazily impressionistic, of the [Debussy]" Sunday Times, 1st April 2012
Orchestral works. 4, Johan Halvorsen.
This is the fourth and final volume of colourful and highly appealing orchestral works by the Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen. The series is performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Neeme Järvi.
Die acht grossen Suiten, Georg Friedrich Handel.
Features Lisa Smirnova. "Russian-born/Austria-based Smirnova takes on these pieces as if they are giants of the repertoire--and they really are, and she folds them into the big-boned body of the modern piano as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Her playing particularly exploits the bold bass-register resonances, leaving no doubt as to these works' power to excite." (10/10 ClassicsToday Jan 2012)
Endless border, Bo Hansson.
The Swede Bo Hansson is a man of many talents: a guitarist, and a composer of a wide range of music in folk and jazz idioms. Choral music might be a relatively recent departure for him but its roots run deep, back to the days of his childhood when he sang as a treble in his local choir. He has observed that the human voice is the closest you can come to your soul and in that search he writes music that demands much of its performers in its sustained intensity of sound, a penchant for a cappella and a fresh way with word-setting even in the most established of texts, as in the darting energy of the Gloria from the Missa brevis.
The seven last words of our Saviour on the cross, Haydn.
It's nicely done, with some finely detailed playing and choral singing of great warmth and beauty. The quartet of soloists are led by Lisa Milne, suitably ecstatic, and by Christopher Maltman, intense and expressive as always. (Guardian)
Love and longing, Ravel, Dvorak, Mahler.
Featuring Magdalena Kozena recorded live at the Berlin Philharmonie.
Symphony no. 2 : "Resurrection", Mahler.
Featuring sopranos Adriana Kucerova and Christianne Stotjin.
Arabesques, dithyrambs, elegies ; and other short piano works, Medtner.
Here is a declaration of musical faith if ever there was one. No pianist has done more for Medtner's reputation than Hamish Milne…[His] playing will surely make Russians, in particular, listen in awe to such magisterial command and poetic empathy… Milne writes his own superb notes, and this is surely in the running for instrumental issue of the year. Editor's Choice Gramophone magazine May 2012
A summer's day : Swedish romantic songs., Anne Sofie Von Otter
Recorded in 2010 in Stockholm.
Towards the horizon : cello concerto no. 2 ; Modificata ; Incantations : percussion concerto, Rautavaara.
This new recording couples Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara's latest concerto works with an orchestral piece from his early Modernist period. The virtuoso Percussion Concerto Incantations (2008) features the Scottish percussion soloist Colin Currie, who is the dedicatee and première performer of this work. Currie wrote himself the virtuoso cadenza to the final movement.
Mass for 40 and 60 voices, Alessandro Striggio.
What increases the appeal of this programme is the accompanying selection of fine motets by Striggio's compatriot Orazio Benevoli's…and some settings of plainchants by Francesco Corteccia that mimic the improvised polyphony that was a common occurrence in festive Masses such as that represented here…this disc certainly merits my personal accolade. Gramophone Magazine, June 2012
Chamber music, Turina.
Nash Ensemble perform the colourful folk melodies and rhythms of Spain which knit seamlessly with twentieth-century French compositional sophistication in Joaquín Turina's chamber works.
Violin concerto no. 1 in E major, op. 10 ; Violin concerto no. 2 in F sharp minor, op. 19 ; Greeting to America : op. 56, Henry Vieuxtemps.
Henry Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) was a French violin virtuoso who, after the death of Paganini, was widely considered to be the best violinist in Europe. Besides being a brilliant player, he was a remarkably fine composer, as demonstrated in these, his first two concertos. Alongside the memorable violin fireworks, Vieuxtemps here shows a well- argued musical sensibility that straddles both the Classical and Romantic eras as well as the ability to write gorgeous, almost operatic slow movements in the best bel canto tradition. This CD features Chloe Hanslip.
Viva! : Simone Kermes sings Vivaldi., Vivaldi
In recent years German soprano Simone Kermes has been the sensation of press and public with her Vivaldi recordings. Here is a single CD compilation of highlights from her two solo Vivaldi recordings on Archiv Produktion, Amor Sacro and Amor Profano.
Water night, Eric Whitacre.
Eric Whitacre follows the Grammy-winning success of his debut Decca album, Light and Gold with Water Night, a brand new album that features no less than seven World Premiere Recordings. Light and Gold was awarded 'Best Choral Performance' in February 2012 at the 54th Grammy Awards for Whitacre's first recording as both composer and conductor. This second disc for Decca juxtaposes music written as a young composer alongside brand new repertoire, both choral and orchestral, displaying the different influences and styles of Whitacre.
