Welcome to the Christchurch City Libraries’ newsletter

Welcome to 2014. This year promises to be an exciting one in our libraries. We start it off with the opening of Central Library Manchester, the moving of some of our collections, and the introduction of two new online resources: Wheelers eBooks, and Zinio for Libraries, a digital magazine service. There is also an update on the progress of the new Halswell Library and Community Facility.

Central Library Manchester opens

Central Library Manchester has opened on the corner of Manchester and Allan Streets

Central Library Manchester, which replaces Central Library Tuam, has opened on the corner of Manchester and Allen Streets. In addition to a selection of fiction and non-fiction books it is also home to the Aotearoa New Zealand, Ngā Pounamu Māori and Local Government collections. The family history resources – including electoral rolls, microfilm newspaper files and telephone and business directories – are now all available here. These have been moved from Central Library Peterborough.

We now offer more New Zealand eBooks

Wheelers ebooks now at Christchurch City Libraries

We have signed on with Wheelers eBooks to provide you with hundreds of new eBook titles, most of which are New Zealand fiction and non-fiction books, and include titles for young adults and children.

Download and read The Luminaries, The Top 10 of Everything Rugby or something from Ngaio Marsh. You can download up to 10 titles at any one time, place free holds and avoid late fees as the eBooks self-expire.

We also offer thousands more eBook titles so download a title from our eBook collection today.

The new Halswell Library and Community Facility

Artists impression of the Halswell Library and Community Facility

Construction on the new Halswell Library and Community Facility is scheduled to begin mid-2014. Some changes will be made to the design to ensure the project delivers the planned features while keeping to its projected budget, meaning the original January start-date has been pushed back a few months. The Halswell summer pool will remain open throughout the season until Sunday 2 March, and will be open for the 2015 summer season throughout construction. 2014 will also see opportunities for the community to have their input into the new facility, including how the space inside the building will be used, from the services on offer to the artwork on the walls.

Hundreds of magazines free for you

Zinio for Libraries offers you access to over 200 magazines

Zinio for Libraries allows you to download and keep magazines. Over 200 titles are available includingTime, Rolling Stone, PC World and OK! Magazine as well as many subject specific titles like Boating, Digital Photo and Trains.
