Armistice Day - November 11

Armistice Day – 11 November – marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War (1914 - 1918) and commemorates the sacrifice of those who died serving New Zealand in this and all wars and armed conflicts. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front in 1918, with the signing of the Armistice.

Commemorations

Wreath-laying ceremonies mark Armistice Day at the National War Memorial in Wellington and at many local War Memorials throughout New Zealand. As part of these ceremonies, two minutes silence is observed at 11am on 11 November in memory of those New Zealanders who died while serving their country.

Christchurch service

This year is the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. To commemorate the occasion a service will be held at the Bridge of Remembrance on Armistice Day, Tuesday November 11, at 11am. Dean of Christchurch Peter Beck, the President of the Christchurch RSA Russell Barron, and the Mayor Bob Parker will address the service, and wreaths will be laid. New Zealand Armed Services, Government and Consular representatives will also be present at the service. Following the service lunch will be available at the Christchurch RSA, 74 Armagh Street, for $12.

Coming Home - 90th Anniversary of the World War One Armistice

From October 2008 to March 2009, the return of soldiers to New Zealand is commemorated in a series of events, talks, movie showings, exhibitions and recitals throughout the country.

Memorials

Christchurch war memorials honour local veterans.

The Bridge of Remembrance was opened on Armistice Day, 11 November 1924 and was dedicated to the memory of those who took part in the 1914-1918 war. At a later date further plaques were added to commemorate the battlefields of World War II.

2006 saw the the dedication of the New Zealand Memorial (below) in London's Hyde Park Corner. The memorial commemorates the enduring bonds between New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and shared sacrifice during times of war.
