Brunner Mine - West Coast - 1896
- Brunner Mine Disaster 26 March, 1896. The Brunner Mine disaster was the worst mining disaster in New Zealand's history. A total of 65 miners died in the disaster, almost half of the Brunner underground work force. Fact file from Christchurch City Libraries
Brynderwyns bus accident - 1963
- A bus chartered to make the return trip from Port Waikato to the Bay of Islands for the Waitangi Day celebrations, left Paihia on the morning of 7 February. At the top of Pilbrow's Hill, the highest point on the road, the driver pulled to the side for a brief stop. When the bus continued, the brakes failed almost immediately. Cave Creek - West Coast - 1995
- On 28 April 1995 17 members of a party of students from the Outdoor Recreation course at Tai Poutini Polytechnic at Greymouth and the Department of Conservation's Punakaiki Field Centre Manager crowded onto the viewing platform high above Cave Creek. The platform collapsed and fell about 30 metres into the resurgence below. As a result 14 young people lost their lives and the other four were injured, some very seriously. Cyclone Bola - East Coast, North Island - 1988
- One of the most damaging cyclones to hit New Zealand was Cyclone Bola, which struck the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne - East Cape region in March 1988. The cyclone slowed as it moved over the area, resulting in over three days of torrential rain. Fact file from Christchurch City Libraries

Landslide Abbotsford, Dunedin - 1979
- On the night of August 8, 1979, a major landslide occurred in Abbotsford, resulting in the destruction or relocation of some 70 houses, and requiring the evacuation of over 600 people.
