Southland Museum and Art Gallery's task is to identify, preserve, interpret and present the historical and artistic taonga (treasures) of Southland for all people to enjoy in the present as well as the future. Maintains an extensive and eclectic variety of exhibitions, covering many different topics. The semi-permanent galleries include: a Maori gallery; the Roaring 40's sub-Antarctic experience; Victorian-era rooms; and Southland's natural history and fossil record. Other galleries feature established and up-and-coming local artisans, as well as in-house and touring exhibitions.

Established in 1987 in one of Hamilton's largest and more unusual building, designed by Ivan Mercep of JASMaD (now Jasmax), Auckland, who went on to design New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa. Houses more than 60,000 taonga/objects in their Visual Arts, Social History, Tangata Whenua and Science collections. The collections contain important taonga from Maaori history from the early years of European settlement to today, including regional art and history, (missionaries, Maori agriculture of the 1850s, Kiingitanga, Waikato campaigns, dairy industry, timber industry, coal-mining, river usage) and New Zealand national events which impact upon the region.
