Guide to accessing family history information at Christchurch City Libraries - main focus is Christchurch and Canterbury information from the 19th and early 20th century.

Archives New Zealand is the "keeper of the Public Record - the memory of government". This site explains their services, publications and holdings.

Auckland City Libraries provides access to a range of family history databases - many searchable and accessible to the general public, others accessible only to library members.
* Bibliography of New Zealand Family Histories

* Canterbury New Zealand GenWeb Project
A genealogical resource for the internet dealing with the Canterbury region. Information provided by volunteers.
* Canterbury Pilgrims & Early Settlers Association
Association for descendants of early pioneers and people interested in the period of Canterbury's formation. Aims of social nature but also to promote and preserve the history of early settlement. Site has early shipping lists, school rolls and photographs.
* Cenotaph Database
A database of over 33,000 New Zealanders who served in war and conflict from the South African War to the present day, and who are now deceased. It is primarily a roll of honour of those who died as a result of war service, but also includes some personnel who have died since.
* The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Minds memorials in over 150 countries and holds information on the 1.7 million members of the British Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars as well as the 60,000 civilian casualties of WWII. This huge database is online as the Debt of Honour Register. Users may search the Register for "personal and service details and places of commemoration" for relatives and "identify the exact location, by cemetery plot or memorial panel, where any given name is commemorated." Search variables include surname, initials, war or year of death, force, and nationality.
* Denise & Peter's Homepage
Personal site which provides miscellaneous information on NZ history and genealogical resources. Includes some shipping lists.
* Dictionary of New Zealand Biography
This website contains over 3,000 biographies of New Zealanders who have 'made their mark' on this country. It does not include people who are alive so you will not find people like John Key or Dan Carter, but you will find people like George Nepia or Michael Joseph Savage. The information on this site is the online version of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.
* First Families
An index compiled from family record sheets that have been contributed by members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. The record is based on the first couple of any family unit living in New Zeland before and including 1901. It may include their children and also their parents. The index is free to search. Members of the NZSG may request additional information via the First Families officer, who will provide the contributors contact details.

A project by The Press, Christchurch, to identify and gather information on the passengers of The First Four Ships to colonise Christchurch and Canterbury.

The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) was founded in 1937 as the New Zealand Federation of Funeral Directors. Its purpose was to promote quality, expertise and integrity in the funeral profession, and to promote the training and education of persons involved in the funeral profession in New Zealand.

Personal site which provides miscellaneous text files on a range of interest topics e.g. early jury lists, passenger lists, military honours. Most are of relevance to the North Island.

Incomplete details provided by volunteers.
* A memory tree
The site records and stores all death notices from 27 of New Zealand's newspapers and provides Remembrance Pages for each person listed. Newspapers are searchable within days of publication. Collection of records began in December 2006 and currently over 60,000 individuals and thousands of death notices are searchable. For best results enter the name into the two Searching for? fields.
* Nelson Data
Personal site providing cemetery and marriage records for the Nelson area.
* New Zealand Defence Force - Medals
Features the more common medals which have been awarded to New Zealand military personnel since the New Zealand Wars of the 1840s and 1860s. It does not cover medals which have been awarded to New Zealanders in small numbers or in unique military circumstances. Because the military history of New Zealand is linked with Britain, British medals awarded to New Zealanders have been included.
* New Zealand Defence Force - Personnel Records
Provides information on who is entitled to apply for details from the records of ex-Service personnel (including medals), how to apply and lists the contact details for Personnel Archives.
* New Zealand Genealogy Made Easy
Personal site providing entries to such things as early electoral rolls and cemetery records.
* New Zealand in the South African ('Boer') War - Embarkation Database and Roll of Honour.
This database was compiled by Colin McGeorge from the Education Department of the University of Canterbury. Colin became interested in the South African War while completing his PhD thesis on the social and moral values fostered in New Zealand schools between 1877 and 1914. The information was sourced from the nominal rolls of the New Zealand Contingents published in the Appendices to the House of Representatives. From nzhistory.net

* New Zealand Presbyterian Marriage records

An index to names in documents held by the Hocken Collections, Dunedin, New Zealand A joint project between the Hocken Collections and the Dunedin Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists At March 2005, the index holds 241 302 records from Electoral Rolls, Street Directories and Police Gazettes for Otago and Southland.
