The influenza epidemic in Christchurch

Elizabeth Best Taylor (née Ellison) (1868-1941), widow of prohibitionist Thomas Edward Taylor (1862-1911), pictured with her staff of workers who cared for children whose parents were ill with influenza. The home of Ethel Pyne, widow of Frederick Henry Pyne (1856-1915), co-founder of Pyne & Co., at 82 Bealey Avenue, was used as a temporary home. An auxiliary to this temporary children's home was at the Canterbury College Women's Students' Hostel in Park Terrace (Bishopscourt). Elizabeth Taylor was the first president of the Christchurch Créche and Kindergarten Association.
