Pictured in the centre is the Bowker Fountain. This is an octagonal spray and water curtain fountain set in a pool which was donated to Christchurch by Henry Layton Bowker (1840-1921), a grocer and land agent in Market (later Victoria) Square. The fountain was opened on 26 Feb. 1931, the money for it having been bequeathed in Bowker's will. The design was supplied by A.R. Galbraith (1877?-1957). At the time this fountain, with its colour effects at night, was the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere
