Christchurch City Libraries is giving people the chance to seek their very own 15 minutes of online fame with its first YouTube competition. A host of prizes is up for grabs including a laptop computer, Sony camcorder, iPhone and hundreds of dollars worth of vouchers.

Christchurch City Libraries and Information Manager Carolyn Robertson said the competition reflects the Libraries’ role to facilitate all types of learning and recreation.

“Access to computers and the internet across our library network allows our customers to use sites such as You Tube, so we encourage as many people as possible to get involved.

“The competition recognises the increasing popularity of film, video and websites such as YouTube, which is why we hope that our customers will jump on board and unleash their creativity.”

“Naturally, the competition is also a way in which we can celebrate a phenomenal 150 years of public library service in Christchurch, so it’s an integral part of our ongoing anniversary celebrations,” said Ms Robertson.

Categories include Open (18 yrs and over), Pulse (13-18 yrs) and Kids (10-12 yrs). Christchurch City Libraries will select the best six videos in each category.

An expert judging panel comprising Kate Roberts (Producer Whitebait TV), John Christoffells (respected director, cinematographer and editor in the New Zealand film industry) and Moata Tamaira of Christchurch City Libraries will select the winners from each category.

Winners will be announced at a special screening event on 7 August 2009 and the winning videos will be featured and publicised on library150.com and shown throughout the library network.
