6 August media release:
The Shirley Library will become a ‘warm and inviting oasis’ following a two-week upgrade programme starting at the end of this month.
The library, next to the Palms Mall, will close from 31 August to 13 September, reopening Monday 14th September. The refurbishment is part of a scheduled upgrade cycle for Christchurch City Libraries. The last make-over for Shirley was over 10 years ago.
During the two week closure Shirley Library customers will have access to the network of Christchurch City Libraries.

Carolyn Robertson, Libraries and Information Unit Manager for Christchurch City Libraries says: "The library is being repainted, re-carpeted and will have some new furnishings and a vibrant new colour scheme developed by an interior designer."
"The new look will incorporate simple design changes that will enable customers to better navigate through the library collections," says Ms Robertson.
"Newly refurbished, the Shirley library will provide a warm and inviting oasis for the Shirley community," she says. "We hope it will be fresh and inviting for our customers and provide a more streamlined service and improved layout which makes it easier to find what is needed."
Other changes include technology that will be modern, easily accessed and supported by friendly and informed library staff in a functional and welcoming environment. Older adults, youth, children, Māori, Pacific, migrant families and visitors alike will find spaces within the library that suit their needs where they feel comfortable, and relaxed.
A sense of spaciousness will be created by capturing natural light and the use of warm colours for the furniture and fittings will lead to versatile, flexible and adaptable areas that can used for special performances, events or children's activities.
