How it worked
Winter Reading Club – Take the challenge! From 18 June you can visit your local library and pick up your challenge card. Just complete four challenges and you will get a mini prize pack.
Fifty of the 500 prize packs contain an invitation to the Winter Reading Club Party on 13 July at South Library.
How to join the Winter Reading Club
- Pick up your challenge card from any library.
- Number one challenge is compulsory.
- Each time you complete a challenge you receive a stamp on that square.
- On completing four, you will receive a prize pack from your local library.
- Fifty of the prize packs contain an invitation to the Winter Reading Club Party in the Sydenham Room at South Library on 13 July at 2pm. You will receive a special prize, enjoy drinks and snacks, hear a cool storyteller, dance to funky music and have your face painted. The invitations are spread randomly across all libraries.
Winter Reading Club Challenges - Ngā Whakamātautau
- Introduce yourself to a librarian who works at your local library. You can find where your closest library is on our Libraries page. If you have a camera, get your photo taken with the librarian. Email it to us at competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com if you can.
- Watch a movie based on a book. The library has lots of movies on DVD. Head to the kids' DVDs and see what you can find!
- Find out the Māori name for your local library. There is a list of the Māori names of our libraries on our Māori Library Names page. You can even listen to a sound file so you know how to pronounce it. Write it on your challenge card.
- Find an article in any kids magazine that you like. You can see which ones we have by doing a search in our catalogue. Read it and write the name of the magazine on your challenge card.
- Read a book that has won an award. There is a list of some kids book award winners here. Did the book deserve the award? Tell a librarian to get a stamp.
- Go to your favourite library and count how many other people are there too. Write the number on your challenge card. You can find where your closest library is on our Libraries page.
- Make, build or draw something from a book. Here are some books that could get you started. Or you could check out the 600 and 700 sections in the kids area of the library. Show it to your local librarian to get your stamp. Send us a photo at competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com if possible.
- Pānuitia he pukapuka Reo Māori, ka tuhi ai i te taitara ki konei. (Read a book in te Reo Māori. You can find a list of the books we have in Te Reo in our catalogue. Write the name of it on your challenge card.
- Visit your favourite library dressed as your favourite book or movie character. There are some books to help you make a costume in our catalogue. Have your photo taken with one of the library staff and email it to us at competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com if you can.
- Create a cake based on your favourite book. There are some books to help you bake a cake in our catalogue. Tell a librarian about it to get a stamp. Send us a photo by email at competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com if you can.
- Conduct a science experiment from a book. Find out how to do some cool ones in our catalogue. Write the name of it on your challenge card. Send us a photo by email at competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com if you can.
- Read a book or article that has some connection to your favourite sport or sportsperson. To find one, go to our catalogue, and put your favourite sport and then “Childrens” in the search box. For example, skateboarding childrens, or netball childrens. Write the name of it on your challenge card.
Terms and conditions
- You must be 5 to 12 years of age (inclusive) and live in Christchurch city.
- Stamps will be available at any library from when the Club opens on 30 June (the first day of the school holidays).
- You can begin your challenges from 18 June or whenever you get your card – from a school visit or from your library.
- Any photos should be emailled to competition@christchurchcitylibraries.com. Sending us a photo means that you are giving us permission to use it for promotional purposes.
- Each time you complete a challenge, tell a librarian and they will then stamp your challenge card.
- Once you have your four stamps you can pick up your prize pack from any library.
- Challenges must be completed by Thursday 12 July at 5pm.
- If your prize pack contains a party invitation you must RSVP before the party to attend.
- If other children in your family have also completed their four challenges they can be included in your party invitation.
- Christchurch City Libraries reserve the right to use the name and residential suburb of the winners, and images supplied by entrants, for promotional purposes.
