Books for Babies: 10th Anniversary
These pages celebrate the 10th birthday of Christchurch City Libraries’ Books for Babies project which began in 1990, International Literacy Year.
The aims of the programme are to encourage early literacy and library use. Each year approximately 5,000 Books for Babies packs are delivered in partnership with local hospitals, home-birth midwives and Friends of the Library volunteers. While the project is funded chiefly by Christchurch City Libraries through the Christchurch City Council, support grants have been received from the Community Trust, Altrusa and the Canterbury Reading Association.
Included on this site are comments from some of the parents who have received a Books for Babies pack during the past 10 years. You can also read more about why it’s important to share stories, language and books with babies, and what’s happening in other places.
If you’d like to comment on the Books for Babies project, please email the library at library@ccc.govt.nz. We’d love to hear from you.
