Crusaders and Schoolchildren Launch Reading Crusade
17 February 2003
Children, teachers and parents representing more than 55 Christchurch schools packed into Central City Library’s Centre for the Child at noon today for the launch of the Reading Crusade.
Crusaders Reuben Thorne, Richard McCaw, Leon MacDonald, Joe Maddock, and Justin Marshall answered questions about their favourite reads, and signed autographs during the launch event.
Richard McCaw told the audience how he wished he had read more when he was at primary school, as it would have made life easier for him at high school and subsequently at university.
Libraries Manager Sue Sutherland thanked the Crusaders for coming on board as partners for the event, and acknowledged the support of The Caxton Press.
Reading Crusade originator, Annette Williams, asked the children to go back to their schools and be ambassadors for the Reading Crusade; urging everyone at school to complete their 12 Super Reads and to send in their entry form for the rugby and reading-related prizes.
