Seaweek 2003
New Brighton Library ran some fascinating activities associated with Seaweek during the second week of March. Not only did this include scintillating displays featuring shells and seabirds, but also juggling by the spontaneous Mr. Adrian Kirk for the children, window painting and competitions with beautiful prizes. The window painting allowed both children (and adults) to get creative with their concept of the sea and sea creatures.
Many activities were affiliated with Coast Care who provided both talks and walks. The week's activities were attended by over 70 people. We would like to thank Coast Care very much for their contribution especially Abi Wightman, Ian Surgenor and Jason Roberts. We would also like to thank Russell Ritchie, for his evening talk on the man made reef being planned to go between the south ramp and the pier, and John Moore for his evening talk on the process so far and intended outcome of the ocean outfall pipe. Tanya Jenkins who has been the Canterbury Seaweek co-ordinator over the last 10 years, and one of the originators of Seaweek nationally, gave up her time once again to help us with the Family fun day. She tells us her “Farewell to the Godwits” on the South New Brighton Spit went really well again this year.
Thanks to Elizabeth Whyte, Jane Barrett for helping co-ordinate things and the Customer Services Team all of the New Brighton Library team.
