Revealing Christchurch’s post-war history is the focus of the Christchurch City Libraries’ Heritage Week 2008 photo competition.

This year’s Heritage Week theme is “Retrospective: Christchurch Life, Architecture and Design 1940s–70s” and people are being asked to enter their photographic memories of the era.

Christchurch Central Library’s Aotearoa New Zealand Centre Team Leader Annette Williams says the overall winner will receive a digital camera, while the winners of each decade will collect a photography voucher.

“We want to get a real sense of the spirit of the era – what Cantabrians were wearing, how they were travelling around, what events they were going to, sports they were playing, what they did for a job, and the type of buildings they liked.”

The photos will be exhibited in libraries throughout Christchurch in the build up to, and during, Heritage Week, taking place from 17 to 27 October. They will also be displayed on the libraries’ online photo album: flickr.com/photos/christchurchcitylibraries

Photos can be entered into one of seven categories: fashion; transport; buildings and streets; sport and recreation; occupations; events; and everyday life.

All photos are welcome and it will be up to the entrant whether details of the people photographed are included on the website.

Photos can be entered now, either in hard copy or by email, with entries closing on 22 October.

Entries can be handed into any library, or sent by email. For more information visit the libraries’ website: christchurchcitylibraries.com/events/competitions.

The overall winner and the winners of each decade will be announced on 28 October.
