A stunning range of live performances, education programmes, competitions, promotions and sponsorship of CHARTFEST shows Christchurch City Libraries is right behind New Zealand Music Month again this May.
Launch event at Christchurch Art Gallery
To kick-start the month, Christchurch City Libraries have collaborated with Christchurch Art Gallery to host a free launch event on Saturday 1 May, with performances from Sacha Vee, The Canterbury Plainsmen and Kim K and Tim Chesney. Audiences will have an opportunity to buy copies of the CHARTFEST 2010 CD ahead of the well-loved one day festival on Friday 28 May.
Throughout the month, a further 50 shows of live, local music will be hosted across the libraries network, including Lindon Puffin, Dev’lish Mary and the Holy Rollers, Stringophilia, Pandemonium and Craig Smith who will perform the 2008 APRA New Zealand Children’s Song of the Year – The Wonky Donkey Song.
Lunchtime concerts
In addition, lunchtime concerts will take place in Cathedral Square and City Mall, while music workshops will be held at Central and South Library, focusing on how to find, use and store New Zealand music, add music to stories, and use various online music tools.
Competition to win an iPod Touch
Libraries will be offering a special CD borrowing promotion to receive a free CD hire and go in the draw to win an Apple iPod Touch. Additional prizes will be offered by promotional DJs from Pulzar FM, who will be setting up outside libraries and linking to live on-air promotions.
To extend its support for Music Month across the city, Christchurch City Libraries is also sponsoring a number of top performances at The Bedford, including Tiki, The Phoenix Foundation, Mt Eden Dub Step, Direct Influence, Chucky and Optimus Grime and Truth.
Libraries and Information Manager Carolyn Robertson says there’s been a huge development in the way library customers play, listen to and relate to music in the nine years they have been supporting Music Month.
“There’s certainly a much greater emphasis today on using technology to access music, from podcasts and iPods to a multitude of online music programmes.
“We welcome customers to visit our libraries and explore our extensive music resources, including a large and varied CD collection, sheet music, online music resources and education programmes.
“It’s important we support local music and I encourage everyone to mark some of these dates in their diary and head along to these free performances. Whatever your musical interest, there’s something for everyone.”
