Christchurch City Council Libraries are trialling a new system to see whether people would like to communicate with the library by texting.
Carolyn Robertson, Libraries and Information Manager, says younger people in particular might like this way of providing feedback or asking questions.
“Some people just prefer texting and it could be helpful during busy periods or when customers are in a hurry,” she says.
The way the Texsys system works is a customer texts Library then a space then their comment, to 4882. This is received by the Libraries as a web email, triggering an automatic text acknowledgement. The comment is followed up where appropriate and a response made within standard business reply times.
“We’re encouraging customers to try this service and will review its success at the end of June,” says Carolyn Robertson.
