The new Aranui Library project is well on track, with the project just gaining a resource consent for the new building.
The eagerly awaited new library facility will be built on land in Aldershot Street, bordering on to Wainoni Park and is due to open in the middle of next year.
“We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed and delighted by community support for the new library and with the enthusiasm that local people are showing for an involvement in its development. When it opens next year it will be a true reflection of community spirit”
, says Carolyn Robertson, Christchurch City Council’s Libraries and Information Manager.
“One of the things people have already started talking about is our plan to have a community planting day next year. We’ll be laying out all the plants in the places where they’re planned to be planted around the library building, and inviting the community to come along and help bed them in. This is a great way to get community ownership of the new library facility”
, says Mrs Robertson.
A new Mobile Library timetable will provide Aranui people with more opportunity to get used to using library services in their own community, and keep up to date with progress on their new library. From 5 July the Mobile Library will continue to visit Eureka St, Hampshire St, and Breezes Rd regularly, and visit other locations by arrangement.
“We would like to bring our Mobile Library bus to community gatherings and events, to give Aranui residents a taste of what’s to come. Our staff welcome suggestions from residents about how the Mobile Library can be part of their activities”
, says Mrs Robertson.
