Christchurch City Council will open a new 'mini' library in the Central City this week.
The new Central South City Library, which is in a refurbished store in South City Mall in Colombo Street, will open on Friday 8 July.
It will host a small collection of around 7000 items that are particularly popular with the public, including new books, adults’ and children’s fiction, DVDs and non-fiction for all ages. The new library will also include a children’s area and five computers, which will offer free internet access in the coming weeks.
Unit Manager Libraries and Information Carolyn Robertson says Christchurch City Libraries have been looking for a suitable Central City location for a new library because the Central Library in Gloucester Street was damaged during the 22 February earthquake and remains closed.
We are pleased to be able to offer a safe and welcoming environment in the Central City again. The new library will also give Central City dwellers and workers easy access to library services again,
she says.
The public will be able to pick up items they have reserved online or over the telephone and return items at the new library. They will also be able to sign up for free library membership.
The Central South City Library will be open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and during weekends from 10am to 5pm.
Mrs Robertson says the Council is continuing to investigate possible central city locations for other 'mini' libraries.
Most Christchurch libraries have now re-opened following the 13 June aftershocks. For more information about which libraries are open, visit /News/Alerts/
