Papanui Library re-opens after February earthquake

Papanui Library has opened to the public for the first time since the 22 February earthquake.

Christchurch City Council has re-opened half the library to the public as Council staff continue to use the other half for temporary offices.

Libraries and Information Unit Manager Carolyn Robertson says it is fantastic to be able to give the library back to the public. Since the February earthquake damaged some of our Council buildings the Council has had to use the library, along with a number of other facilities, to temporarily house our staff. However, it has always been a priority to give these facilities back to the public as soon as possible and we are pleased to be able to return the first of the libraries that have been occupied by staff.

As only half the library is currently open, the collection available for borrowing is smaller than usual. There are six computers available for public use.

The part of the library that re-opened this week has been refurbished as part of an overall upgrade of the library approved before the February earthquake.

Council staff are due to vacate the library once work on the Rexel/Kathmandu building in Lichfield Street, which is being converted into temporary offices for Council staff, is completed.

Once Council staff have left, new carpet will be laid, the walls will be repainted and book shelves re-built. There is currently no confirmed opening date for the rest of the library.

Fendalton and Upper Riccarton libraries, which are also being occupied by Council staff, remain closed to the public.
