Bishopdale Community Centre and Library closes
3 November 2011
Christchurch City Council will close the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library at the end of today (Thursday 3 November) until further notice.
This decision has been made after the Council received the results of a detailed engineering evaluation of the building. Engineers have recommended the building should be vacated until they complete more assessments and until earthquake strengthening work is also completed.
Engineers inspected the building after the 22 February earthquake and the building received a green sticker. Since then, the Council has been carrying out more detailed engineering evaluations of its buildings; today’s decision is a result of this process.
Corporate Services General Manager Paul Anderson says the Council made the decision to close the facility after receiving the engineering report today.
We wanted to make absolutely sure that there is no risk to the public or to our staff in the event of future earthquakes or aftershocks.
The nearby Fendalton, Papanui and Redwood libraries remain open. For more information about libraries, including the mobile service, visit http://christchurchcitylibraries.com and the Library news page.
