Monday 16 December 2013
Diane Rolton’s photo of Father Christmas at 4 Square took the prize as Overall Winner in the Christchurch City Libraries Photo Hunt 2013 award ceremony last Thursday.
Christchurch City Libraries Manager Carolyn Robertson said, in presenting the prize, It is the detail of ordinary people’s everyday lives that tell us most about where we’ve come from.
The winning image shows Faith Sumner and her three children meeting Santa Claus outside the 4 Square shop on the corner of Milton and Selwyn Streets around 1952. The judges commented that the image captured wonderful details of family life in the 1950s.
In addition to being named Overall Winner, Diane Rolton also won the Places – buildings, suburbs and city section with her night photograph Millers Department Store, Tuam Street 1953.
Andrea McHarg took the prize in the People – families, cultural and social events section with her photo The violin man who regularly busked outside the ANZ bank on Colombo Street.
Dave Reynolds and Julia Thomas were highly commended for their series of photos and stories.
This year’s Photo Hunt attracted an unusually wide variety of images among the 480 entries on the theme of Reconnect Christchurch. Contestants were asked to submit photos about ‘Reconnecting with Canterbury heritage’. All entries were scanned and will contribute to the library’s visual record of the changing face of Christchurch.
