Holmes's A. 1 Temperance Hotel, 58 Manchester Street, Christchurch
[ca. 1900]
This private hotel was on the corner of Manchester and George (later Southwark) Streets. At the time Mrs Ann Holmes (later Westerman) (d. 1908) was the proprietress. In the late 1940s it became the Manchester Private Hotel. It was demolished in November 1963 after it had been condemned by the City Council. At the time a newspaper report said that parts of the building were over 100 years old. The cleared site was to be used by a firm of motor-vehicle dealers as an open-air lot for car sales. See The Press, 11 Nov. 1963, p. 21
