Avon Lodge, Riccarton Road (opposite Konini Street), Christchurch
[ca. 1900]
This 32-roomed mansion was built to replace what Shand family tradition says was a two-storey cob house which had been the first family home on the 100 acres on Riccarton Road bought by John Shand (1805-1874) in 1851. The farm, for which he had paid £300, extended from Matipo Street to Wharenui Road and from Riccarton Road to Blenheim Road. The house was built in 1870 at a cost of £6,000 and demolished in 1941 after the Housing Department bought the property and then reversed their earlier decision to convert the house into five flats for students
