Surf life savers and crowd on New Brighton beach.

Claudius Akbar Cooper (commonly known as Claude Cooper) (1891-1974) is pictured on top of the life-saving reel which was acquired by the New Brighton Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club in 1911. The Club had been set up in 1910 after a number of drownings. Cooper was captain for five years and president for twenty. He competed with the life-saving movement, winning two national championship gold medals and a gold medal and trophy for pier life-saving. For further information see The Press, 11 Apr. 1974, p. 10.
