Sumner beach, showing the pier and Cave Rock.
[ca. 1900]
The pier was built in 1883-1884 and was built out from the stone steps where the restaurant On the Beach is in the early 21st century. It housed the original lifeboat rescue up to 1930 after it was moved from Cave Rock. The pier housed the Sumner Surf Club for a short period in the early 1950s after beach erosion meant the removal of the old surf club building. A new clubhouse was later constructed on Clifton beach. The stone hut was built in 1898. (Information supplied by the Sumner-Redcliffs Historical Society)
