Fred Wood, of Leicester, England (acclaimed world cycling champion), and W. Brown, of the Brixton Ramblers, visited New Zealand in late 1887/early 1888 to compete in international races against local riders. Wood did particularly well, winning many events and making attempts at the half-mile and 10-mile world records, while capturing the 1-mile record (2 min., 50.75 sec.)
