Nurse Akenehi Hei, who was the first Maori nurse to qualify in 1908, outside her tent hospital

After general (at Napier) and midwifery training (at St. Helen's Hospital, Christchurch), Akenehi worked in Gisborne, Te Kao, Russell, Rotura and New Plymouth. While based at New Plymouth she also nursed at Jerusalem and Pipiriki on the Whanganui River. She died of typhoid at Gisborne on 28 Nov. 1910.
