The interior of Messrs R. Wilkin & Company's wool store, Hereford Street, Christchurch
[ca. 1885]
Robert Wilkin and Co., merchants, auctioneers and estate agents, occupied several buildings on about a quarter of an acre in Hereford Street. A Scot born in Dumfriesshire, Wilkin lived in Australia before coming to Canterbury to farm and engage in agricultural businesses. Prominent men asked him to stand for Superintendent in 1863 but he declined as he had not firmly established himself on his sheep runs in the Ashburton area. He named the area called Tinwald. Robert Wilkin, 66, died in Christchurch on 20 June 1886.
